Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup butter
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon red food coloring
- Cinnamon and sugar mixture (for rolling)
- Oil (for frying)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: Melt butter and mix with water, sugar, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until boiling. Remove from heat and mix in flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder until smooth.
- Mix in Flavoring: Let the dough cool slightly, then add eggs one at a time, mixing well. Stir in vanilla extract and red food coloring.
- Pipe the Churros: Fill a piping bag with the dough. Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (180°C). Pipe dough into hot oil, cutting with scissors for desired lengths.
- Fry Until Golden: Fry in batches for 3–4 minutes until golden brown, flipping for even cooking.
- Sugar Coating: Roll warm churros in cinnamon and sugar mixture.
- Serve with Sauce: Make a cream cheese icing by combining cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract.
Notes
Monitor oil temperature while frying to avoid soggy or burnt churros. Let churros rest slightly before coating in sugar.
