Fun and festive sugar cookies decorated for Halloween, perfect for kids and adults alike.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 36 cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (or plant-based butter for dairy-free)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (or light brown sugar for deeper sweetness)
  • 1 egg (or flax egg for vegan)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (or almond extract for a twist)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Halloween sprinkles, candy eyes, and food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add egg and vanilla, mixing until well combined.
  3. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl. Gradually add to wet mixture.
  4. Chill dough for at least 30 minutes to make rolling easier.
  5. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to ¼-inch thickness.
  6. Cut shapes using Halloween cookie cutters.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes until edges are just golden.
  8. Cool completely, then decorate with frosting, sprinkles, or melted chocolate.

Notes

For vibrant frosting, gel food coloring works better than liquid. Use parchment paper for easy cookie removal.
