Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (or whole wheat flour)
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- Flaky sea salt for topping
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix warm water with sugar and sprinkle the yeast on top. Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Add melted butter and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually incorporate flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
- Punch down the dough, divide it into smaller pieces, roll into long ropes, and cut into bite-sized morsels.
- In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a gentle boil. Boil the pretzel bites for 1 minute, then transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Brush each bite with melted butter and sprinkle with sea salt. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving with your favorite dips.
Notes
For a dairy-free option, use coconut oil or vegan butter. Don’t skip the boiling step for that classic pretzel crust!
