A delightful cake featuring nutty brown butter and sweet maple syrup, topped with a crumbly topping for a perfect balance of flavors.

  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (for browning)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup maple syrup (preferably pure)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat until golden brown and nutty, about 5-10 minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the browned butter with both sugars, then beat in the eggs and vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  5. Alternately add the dry ingredients and maple syrup to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  6. For the crumb topping, mix 1 cup flour, ½ cup brown sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and ¼ cup melted butter; crumble over the batter in the pan.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack; drizzle warm maple syrup before serving.

Notes

Be careful not to let the butter burn while browning, and allow the cake to set before cutting for perfect slices.
